Unfortunately like majority the history of African Americans in the U.S, slavery is involved in one form or another. However, black theatre has made significant strides with most famously beginning with John Leacock’s play The Full of British Tyranny(1776). This performance finally put the African American community in a positive spotlight, but racism still strongly persisted. Minstrelsy started to rise, but even that carried with it stereotypes. Famous theaters including the African Grove Theater. Athens itself has the well known historical Morton Theater, which holds an amazing background in its heydays through the 1900s. Names such as James Hewett, James Weldon Johnson, and Aubrey Lyles and Flournoy Miller will be forever mormalialized for their contributions to civil rights through theatrical performanceAs the 1920's hit, so came the Harlem Renaissance, which brought a huge influx of black media and art created. Another theater, the Federal Theatre, came later and helped to employ African Americans while also further opening up black theatre.Although a lot of steps have been made in a positive direction, racism is still a consistent issues that is seen not just in the U.S, but also all across the world.
